Content of the training
The core-business of a teacher is teaching children to read, to write, to calculate, etcetera. But that is not everything he does in his daily work. The attention of teachers is not limited to the intellectual aspects of a child’s development. Children think, move, feel, hope, regret, envy; children are more or less sensitive, afraid, sad, happy, etcetera. A child, like every human being, is a physical, cognitive, emotional and social entity. A good teacher does not seperate a child’s learning process from the other aspects of his development. A child is not a vessel a teacher can fill with knowledge, without taking into account the strength and weaknesses of the child.
That is exactly the reason why the course on ‘How to understand and support children in need’ is developed. The starting point of this course is the idea that teaching of children will be more effective and guidance more fruitful, when a teacher is able to understand a child in all aspects of his life: his family background, his upbringing at home, the way the child feels and belongs to others, his fears and ambitions, etcetera.
Teachers are experts. They know the children in their school better than others, sometimes even better than their parents. For the most part this knowledge is intuitive. For example, a teacher is under the impression that one of his children feels lonely and intuitively he tries to understand what the problem might be and he tries to help the child as good as he can. In some instances there is nothing wrong with this approach. On the contrary, acting on one’s intuition is common pratice for a teacher in his daily work. We may call it ‘working on the basis of experience’. But experience alone cannot be the basis of everything a teacher does When the problems of a child are more complex, a teacher needs a more systematic approach.
This course offers teachers a method of systematic reflexion on childrens’ problems at school. The main tool in this reflexion is the so-called ‘step-by-step model’. This model offers teachers a rich recourse for analysing children’s problems and analyzing their own way of thinking and acting critically. More over the model forces the teacher to focus his work in school on educational, moral and religious principles and objectives. The step-by-step model is a reflexion on what a teacher does and ought to do.
Revenues
The results and impact of the training will differ from person to person. The success depends on to which extent you will be involved in the course. In other words, it comes down to having an open (learning) mind. In addition, there is the input and approach given by the trainer. He or she will stimulate you to continue to develop yourself during the training but also afterwards. Of course, the success also depends on the training course itself. An evaluation form will enable you to give feedback after the training. We hope the training will contribute to an open attitude, needed skills and new insights in your own way of analyzing children’s problems and their behavior and in your own way of supporting this children in the right way!
Target group
Any teacher who needs to be (more) knowledge, skills and a change of attitude in understanding and supporting children who are in need of help.
Goals of the training
After the training you will:
- be aware of what your role as teacher is in supporting children in need of help and will have acquired practical tools to fulfil this role
- have a good understanding of the support model ‘understanding children-step-by-step’ and you will be able to apply the step-by-step model on your own cases.
- know how to gather relevant information to better understand what a child thinks, feels, needs and wishes for
- know what good communication is and will be able to apply the guidelines for good communication/interviewing
- know what good observation is and be able to apply practical guidelines for observation in the classroom
